Hunter Biden, son of U.S. President Joe Biden, has been unsuccessful in his attempt to get tax charges dismissed. U.S. District Judge Marc Scarsi denied multiple motions to dismiss a case where Hunter Biden is accused of evading $1.4 million in taxes.
In his ruling, Judge Scarsi stated that Biden’s defense provided little evidence of alleged political bias, a key argument for dismissing the charges. The defense’s claim of discriminatory prosecution lacked substantial support, according to the judge.
Despite pleading not guilty to all charges, Hunter Biden’s team argued that the charges were politically motivated, citing pressure from Republicans. They also claimed immunity under a previous plea agreement. However, these assertions have not swayed the court’s decision.
Abbe Lowell, Hunter Biden’s lawyer, expressed disagreement with the ruling and plans to continue defending his client.
This decision paves the way for a potential trial in June, coinciding with President Biden’s campaign for re-election against Donald Trump.
In a separate but related case, Hunter Biden faces charges for allegedly lying about illegal drug use while acquiring a handgun. This indictment and the tax charges both stem from an investigation led by Special Counsel David Weiss.
A previous plea agreement, which could have allowed Hunter Biden to avoid prison by admitting to two misdemeanors related to tax and the gun case, fell apart. The deal’s collapse was due to questions regarding immunity provisions from future charges.
If convicted in the tax evasion case, Hunter Biden could face up to 17 years in prison.
