According to a report from a government agency, New York has contributed over 37% of the total tax revenue from betting in the United States.

The U.S. Census Bureau, which conducts the Quarterly Survey of State and Local Tax Revenue (QTAX), recently included sports betting among its tracked tax sources.

The QTAX data for the third quarter of 2023 highlighted New York’s significant role, with sports betting activities nationally generating nearly $506 million in tax and gross receipts.

New York led the charge in tax revenue from sports betting, amassing $188.5 million in the third quarter of the last year, outpacing all other states. Indiana followed as the second-highest contributor with $38.6 million.

Other notable contributors included Ohio, Illinois, and Pennsylvania, with tax revenues of £32.9 million, £32.4 million, and $28.8 million, respectively.

New York Sets New Benchmarks Following this, New York achieved another milestone in gambling revenue. It set a new online sports betting revenue record in January, reaching $211.5 million, surpassing its previous month’s figure.

In December 2023, the state’s gambling revenue was $188.3 million, which then saw a 12.3% increase in January, marking a 41.6% rise year-over-year.

FanDuel, owned by Flutter Entertainment, emerged as the top betting operator in New York State, recording an unprecedented online revenue of $109.2 million in January.

These developments solidify New York’s position as the leading state in tax revenue from sports betting in North America, despite the absence of igaming in its market.

New York’s Governor Kathy Hochul, in her 2025 executive budget, did not introduce igaming, a disappointment for proponents of online gambling.

Senator Joseph Addabbo proposed a revised igaming bill last month, including online lotteries, which could potentially add $1 billion to the state’s tax revenue. However, Governor Hochul has not yet moved forward with this opportunity.
